[Happy New Moon!]

I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself than be crowded on a velvet cushion.
- Henry David Thoreau

Lab Music: Of Montreal's Skeletal Lamping, Zappa's Apostrophe ('), Al Stewart's Time Passages and High Places were the soundtrack during the construction of this week's Evolve Detroit.

Hello Detroit!
(and all those who grace us here!)
Happy New Moon and Harvest to everyone! Welcome to this week's Evolve Detroit. We took last week off after Bioneers and now we're back with a short transmission to keep everyone up to date.

As we almost always do here, we'll ask you to take a break from whatever it is you're working on and use this Evolve Detroit as an opportunity to shift gears a bit. Top off your glass or cup, sit back a bit in your chair and take a few deep breaths. You know, the kind of breath where you sink down into the end of the exhale? Give yourself permission to take a few of those and then allow yourself to read through all the info below, engage with it, follow a few links or google something that catches your eye. As always we thank you for your time and interest.

Gratitude Is Key!
We love gratitude and believe it's one of the principles that keeps this whole construct from spinning wildly out of control. That's why we always take time here to express how much we appreciate you all. Whether this is the first time you've read Evolve Detroit or you've been with us since the beginning, we are grateful for your attention and your interest. We would not be here if it were not for you all.

Today, we want to send a very special thank you to everyone who helped us out at Bioneers. We were blessed by a volunteer staff that were incredibly efficient! The food was wonderful, we received rave reviews and we couldn't have done it without the gracious assistance of our volunteers. Thank You!

We also want to thank the 50+ people who came out for last week's Free Movie Night in the Market. The shed was incredibly warm, Angela's chili was tasty and we all learned a great deal about the quest for clean energy. Thanks to Great Lakes Bioneers Detroit, Eastern Market and Steve Gutterman of Clean Water Action who presented on 1Sky.

Finally we want to thank everyone who attended last Saturday's Body Awareness Workshop on Ahimsa. We were so truly blessed by this call and the opportunity to share with others at this level. We encourage you all to keep an eye out for the November Body Awareness Workshop on Shamanism!

The Lab Get's CRAFTY! (sorry, we couldn't resist)
We're getting ramped up for the Detroit Urban Craft Fair on November 15th at the Fillmore. We're the exclusive food vendors and we'll be crafting an incredible menu for this free event. Come to the Fillmore, save gas by getting all your holiday gifts in one place, support the DIY movement, and eat some of Angela's award winning food! This is a huge event for us and we're going to be focused on creating the best craft fair food ever had for the next few weeks. If we are a little pre-occupied please understand, we pour a heaping helping of love and intention into all our work.

The Lab is Now Hiring!
All of this being said, we're hiring folks to help prep and staff DUCF. We're looking for experienced kitchen and front end staff. A heartfelt passion for food and dedication to the health and service of others is requisite. Our intention for this event is to provide over 1000 people the opportunity to experience the power of vibrant healthy food. We would love to work with as many of you here as possible to this end. If you would like to help with what we think is probably the largest vegan catering event ever in Detroit, please email Angela or call 313.316.1411. To reiterate, these are not volunteer opportunities, they are paid positions! We will be sending a post to Craigslist later in the week but wanted to get this to you first! Here's the official listing:

Voted the #1 Vegetarian in Metro-Detroit, this is a great opportunity to be a part of serving Detroit healthy and delicious vegan food, as well as getting out the message of a cruelty-free, sustainable lifestyle!

You can Volunteer at DUCF too!
Handmade Detroit are looking for volunteers to help create the most awesome Detroit Urban Craft Fair ever. They asked us to get this out to you all:

Volunteers do everything from distributing posters to DUCF-day stuff like greeting shoppers and decorating. We are happy that people talk about the DUCF experience as one of their favorites — and volunteers are our secret weapon to that goal. {We also thank our volunteers with swag and food and whatever else fun that comes from the day — and we are happy to sign community service slips as well.} Interested? Just e-mail your availability to stephanie {AT!} handmadedetroit {DOT!] com and we will be in touch with more details. Please pass this along to friends!

Until Next Time
We hope to see a few of you at Earthworks Harvest Dinner Wednesday and throughout the week in the city! Keep an eye out for our return to classes after DUCF! Our blessing to all of you. Thank you all so much for all you do.

In Health, Joy and Liberation!

These secrets of yoga are within the hearts of everyone. ~Yoga Rahasya III.29

Yoga sessions at the Lab are always dedicated to the health, joy and liberation of all beings. Special attention is paid to the act of doing yoga in Detroit and sharing the personal change achieved with change in the community. Our classes are taught specifically for the students in attendance. Yoga is first and foremost about the breath and does not refer to our experience or physical flexibility. In the Lab we find common ground daily and practice from that point.

Market Saturdays are particularly energetic and our practice reflects and contributes to that energy. What could be better than visiting the market, doing yoga and picking up all your fresh fruits and vegetables?

Detroit Evolution's Yoga Instructors:

Gregg Newsom
Gregg connected to yoga at a young age but began his focused study and practice in 1994. In addition to asana, he pursued pranayama, meditation, tantra and more esoteric studies. In 2004, he began to teach at yoga studios and medical centers across the Metro Detroit area. Though teaching many styles of yoga, his personal practice is Ashtanga. In 2006, Gregg traveled to Mysore, India to study with Ashtanga guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. His time in India enhanced his connection to the traditional practice of yoga and he strives to share this with all of his students. He's been blessed to practice and study with Matthew Darling, Manju Jois, David Life, Sharon Gannon, Tim Miller and R. Sharath Rangaswamy. Gregg writes on yoga and other topics in his Detroit As A Portal blog.

Shelly Smith, RYT
Shelley believes in the power of yoga to positively transform one’s mind, body, and soul, the effects of which benefit not only the student, but also all those around them. She is inspired to joyfully share the infinite benefits of yoga with as many beings as possible to promote peace, love, and positive change in the world. Shelley has been fortunate to find beautiful and inspiring teachers in Michael Johnson, Matthew Darling, and many others she meets along the path. She has had the opportunity to study anatomy and yin yoga with Paul Grilley, and to practice ashtanga yoga with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. In 2008, Shelley created PLAY Yoga Magazine, a free resource devoted to bringing our local yoga community together and celebrating the study, practice, and lifestyle of yoga in Metro Detroit.

Vegan and Raw Classes!

Looking for a home in Detroit?
We've never done this before, but our friend Heather asked us to pass this along to our community:
The apartment is 900 sq ft, heat included, parking, pet friendly, storage space in basement, laundry (that is shared but totally nice for privacy, no worries of strange people taking your close if left over night), back yard, private back porch, big kitchen, hard wood floors. We are asking $650 & optional high speed internet with basic cable for an additional $50 per month. If $650 is too high, make an offer! If you are interested email us and we'll connect you!

Purpose

Purposeful (Not Random) Acts of Kindness
by Garie Thomas-Bass, Kertia Thomas-Black and Kirtis Thomas III

We have copies of Garie's book in stock at the Lab for $16 or if you're out of town you can order a copy through Amazon.

If you purchase one here the funds will go straight to Garie without Amazon taking a cut. You'll also save the shipping cost, packaging, cut down on fuel being burnt on ground delivery and take 2 if not more major corporations out of the transaction! Whew! Sounds like a massive revolution in just one simple act doesn't it? I think you get our point! :)

"Even though our book may not be considered politically correct, it is written with the hope that some ideas that used to be called “common sense” will again become the behavior of choice. There is one rule presented for each week of the year. The fifty-two “suggestions” Our hope is that each person will use in his/her life some of these straightforward and easily applied ideas after it is understood why they are important. Truthfully, these rediscovered actions will allow us to live together in society with as little confrontational stress as possible."
